St. Francis just signed Lakeland Laker Kyle Witham. Witham will be coach Tim Sirk's "go to" guy this year for the Lakers. Personally, I believe Kyle will be a quiet, but surprising addition. The kid is athletic, strong, good ball handling skills... and well he is just a well rounded player.
Just want to give a little respect to coach Sirk (and so many other high school coaches) for building quality high school programs that give their kids the ability to go on and get an educaiton at the next level. Coach Sirk has sent around five kids to the NAIA level, and has two at the D-1 level currently playing.

May I make a strictly amateurish, minimally informed, and somewhat anecdotal observation? Feel free to come after me with both feet, Bethel Nation - and I am sure you will! A major problem for the Bethel basketball program is that they overrecruit. That is why they have great recruiting classes year after year, but it has not translated into success on the court - at least since 1999 (unless you count the NCCAA Championship last year, which...well, never mind.) There are stars, and there are role players, and you need to recruit some of each. Too many stars - and only one basketball - hampers results on the court. Just an observation from about 120 miles away - though my kid is a Bethel alum, so I have a little bit of knowledge here. Can't wait to read you all's reaction! Seriously, though, I would like to hear what you guys have to say on this.

CUfan, are you suggesting that you purposely recruit mediocre talent?
You are correct, though. Bethel's problems haven't really been recruiting. Lightfoot is a very good recruiter, especially regarding under-hyped players (Kyle Sears, David Keister, William Walker, etc.). I don't think that many of the recruits are leaving because of playing time. Many times it's because of the lifestyle one must live by while being a Bethel student.

I don't think it is mediocre talent, but Mock is proving to be an example of this, as was Yoder and Haifley...there are hustle guys you get on your team, and you don't expect them to score, and they know their role and they play it well. Some of HU's issues this year are likely from having people need to change roles, it takes time to adjust. Benge and Sheckler look like they have figured it out some. Kyle definitely knows his role. Mock, Kellen, Shively, and Stoffel have all adjusted, but the team knows when to step up, but our scorers are going to be Sheck, Benge, and Kyle...With Smith, Shively and anyone else filling in as necessary. I am starting to become guardedly optimistic about this squad...
All that to say, yes, you recruit certain people for certain roles...and not all are to be stars...Bethel tends to get a lot of guys who are "star" type guys.

How do you know what role a player is going to fill? Most people would've never thought Kyle Sears would've been the player he was. He was the 4th in scoring on his high school team. I remember going to the area all-star game and seeing Sears in the stands thinking, "This kid didn't even get an invite." Yet, he was one of the best players at BC since 2000. Was he recruited to be a role player or a 'star'? I think you recruit the best player you can and then play the one that's playing best. I guess I just assumed having a talented bench meant you have decent depth. Luke Zeller demonstrates this as well. He was recruited by ND to be a 'star' and ended up being a role player.
I think you recruit guys like Caleb Laidig and KC Victor hoping they'll only have to be role players (read: non-starters) for their first year or two and then be 'stars' the last two years. Outside of diaper dandies, this is how it works many times.
I'd also say that you don't go 1-10 in the conference because you have too many 'stars'.

I see both sides on this. Coaches obviously want the best talent they can get. However, it is sometimes a tough task to get all of these players on the same page as to what their roles are. Some players like Kyle Sears blossom and benefit from being recruited as a role-type player. Basically, I believe you can have all the talent in the world and be great, or you can be mediocre. It all depends on chemistry.

Obviously if you can get a shooter who is athletic and is just a pure scorer... you get them and get a lot of them. However, it's necessary to get guys who can fill a role such as a distributing PG, a banger center that just sucks in rebounds, a hustler off the bench who plays lock-down defense, etc.

Schaper was definitely a "star" I don't remember the rest of that roster, but I know you had some other guys that you expected a lot from that didn't materialize...1-15 takes a special kind of bed chemistry though.

if Bethel doesnt get Davis, it won't be from lack of effort. lightfoot's been a '2 year regular' at Plymouth games. Davis, in my opinion, would be a starter for any MCC school next year, Bethel and Huntington included. Honestly, I believe he's thinking bigger than the MCC. The MAC, MVC, and whatever conference Valpo's in have shown interest. Can he play at that level? No doubt. But , i would say a redshirt year (in the weight room, believe it or not he has not lifted other than a school class) plus maybe a minor contributer year, then a major contributer. The question being, does he want to go through that kind of process???
