From BC website: think the writer fells like Bethel was snubbed by conference awards?
Sweet Home Alabama, Softball Earns Fifth Consecutive Trip to National Championship
Game 1 Final
Bethel College Pilots: 9
Huntington University (MCC Tournament): 0
Game 2 Final
Bethel College Pilots: 7
Marian University (MCC Tournament): 4
Game Summary
Despite not having the player of the year, pitcher of the year, or coach of the year as voted on by the MCC coaches, the Bethel College softball team earned the MCC Tournament Championship on Thursday to add to the regular season championship they took home last week.
In day two’s opener, the Pilots took on Huntington University and recently named pitcher of the year Molly Long. Just as they did in the regular season, the Pilots got to Long early and often to run her from the game early. Thursday, Long only lasted three innings as she gave up eight hits and five earned runs.
In the circle for the Pilots was one of Bethel’s two aces, Giana Zimmerman. Zimmerman threw a five inning complete game shutout with ten strikeouts.
The Pilots used the long ball in the route of the regular season second place finishers as Alyssa Zimmerman went deep twice while Brookelyn Smith and Katie Boocher each blasted balls over the fence.
The win over Huntington set up a rematch of last year’s title game versus Marian University.
In the title game the Pilots took on another MCC coaches’ honoree in player of the year selection Emily Gwaltney. Once again, the Pilots offense showed its might as they took down the Knights by the score of 7-4.
The Pilots were led by Katie Boocher who was out to prove that she’s not a bad player in her own right. Boocher blasted two more homers off the player of the year to bring her NAIA career leading total to 58. Boocher also picked up the win in the circle as she started and threw four innings before giving way to game one winner Giana Zimmerman.
Emily Lamkin also hit a home run, her first of the year while Alyssa Zimmerman was 3-3 with an RBI.
After the tournament, the MCC announced its All-Conference selections. Five Pilots were named All-Conference headlined by seniors Katie Boocher and Kaitlyn Dubois. Juniors Holly Weaver and Giana Zimmerman along with freshman Katrina Klingberg were also named All-Conference.
Head Coach Anna Welsh, who was passed over for coach of the year honors despite leading the Pilots to the regular season and tournament championships even after the graduation of six starters from last year’s squad, had this to say, “I’m very proud of this team. Not many people gave us a chance this year considering the amount of quality players we lost to graduation. Even though we have represented this conference very well at nationals for the past four seasons, the coaches didn’t pick us to win this year. I can tell you without a doubt that our program felt disrespected. Our players knew we had something to prove and we used it as motivation for the entire season. I’m proud of the things this team was able to do this year.”
With the championship the Pilots will be the MCC’s automatic qualifier to the NAIA National Championship for the fifth consecutive year. The tournament will be held in Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 19 – 25.
