Well they're going to get Andrew Luck so... I think they'll be OK. It's like 1998 all over again.

The Polians haven't exactly been magical...They picked correctly getting Manning over Leaf...and the rest of their tenure has largely been a crapshoot. Manning covered a multitude of stupid decisions on their part. you take that one perfect choice away and this is, well, a 2-14 team. That should tell you something. Look at their last 4 drafts and tell me the Polians haven't lost their touch.

I'm glad the Packers didn't consult with their franchises best player ever at the end of his career/tenure, or the 2011 Super Bowl champions would have been a different team.

That's the thing...Peyton is more than just the franchises best ever player.
He is the face of the entire organization.......he is the reason for Lucas Oil Field.....he is the reason that the Colts have become some a major marketing tool ($$). He is the Indianapolis Colts.

Jim Irsay tweet. "Lets not sugar coat this thing either...we have the #1 pick in the NFL for one reason..we were the worst team n the league..u r.who u r."
Peyton Manning may be the face of the Indianapolis Colts but they need a lot more than a QB right now. It will be real interesting how all this shakes out come next season.

Polian has said in the past months that he didn't know who you could carry two quality quarterbacks under the salary cap. My guess this move insures Irsay will get his diamonds even if he has to put them on a plastic ring.

Even for rebuilding, if Manning is healthy...trading that first pick would net you at least 4 3rd round and higher draft picks (The Browns have 3 top 40 picks this year, including the 4th overall)...Get a decent quarterback to sit behind manning this year or next, and use the extra picks gained to get more talent on both sides of the ball. We would be likely making the play offs again, and then in a few years, you should have enough talent to turn the reigns over to the new QB, without a terrible "rebuilding" time period...I think starting with Luck this year and letting Manning walk without paying the 28 million, and getting nothing for him in return...this colts team would be getting a top 3 pick the next two years at least.

If Manning can play, I agree with Rub, trade #1 and a stockpile some picks--I might do it even if Manning can't play

I'm just not sure you can bank on Manning being even a shell of his old self. This neck injury is serious. Compound that with the fact that you have the #1 pick and what has been labeled a "once in a generation QB" sitting there. I just don't see how you can pass that up.

Dont' forget also that the Colts put A LOT of players on the IR this year.....essentially shutting them down to preserve them going forward. So yes, while the Colts need help in other spots........not as many as you would assume. Off the top of my head, other than Peyton Manning the Colts essentially played all season without:
Gary Brackett (Starting Linebacker) Dallas Clark (Starting TE) Melvin Bullitt (Starting Safety) Eric Foster (Starting DT) Jerraud Powers (Starting CB)
They ended the season with 15 players on the IR.

Kyle...even if that's true...then we need WAY more depth at these positions...
I don't think you have to have the best QB in the world to win Super Bowls...and I think the can't miss guy does sometimes miss...
I would rather get a guy like RG3, if it meant we could get some OL, WR and CB help...this team needs to be better all over. Manning could give us a couple years at slightly lower level and a better all around team still could get to the play offs.

The Irsay's and the Colts were the laughing stock of the league before Polian came and Polian has always won, wherever he has been.
I know who my money would be on.....

Sounds to me like the Polians were a bit like the Knights were to Texas Tech......and Irsay wasn't going to go that route, especially after how poorly young Polian has been drafting.

If GMs were held to the same standards of QBs there would have been a lot of questions about Polian...with all his success at buffalo...he never won a Super Bowl until about a decade with Indy...
His past 4-5 years have netted about 5 guys that have been big contributors...and those have largely been mid-late round picks who just panned out. he has been missing with top picks for the most part and that has to get better.
