Washington will now take on a team from my home area Geneseo and their stud Tyler Storm who is committed to Northern Illinois. It should be a good game, but I bet Roth and Washington come out on top. I am also betting DJ Richardson will be a far better college player than Matt Roth.

The Illini beat Minnesota for a Big Ten record 19th straight time on Senior Day this afternoon 67-58. It was an emotional win and a lot of interesting things happening.
1. Illinois was dominating on the boards out rebounding the Gophers 45-19. Yep that's right, 45-19. Brian Randle almost had as many rebounds as the opposition with 12 boards of his own.
2. A 30-40 year-old guy came out of one of the balcony entrances at halftime during the 3-in-1 dressed as the Chief. It was a pretty good likeness and caused quite a stir in Assembly Hall. This is an issue that will not die any time soon. I'm conflicted about all of it. I think it was a honored tradition that wasn't trying to demean Native Americans, but if Native Americans were offended, then I guess it should be gone. Since a ruling has been made I don't think it helps to keep bringing it back up and having stuff like this, but man was the place electric when that guy showed up today.
3. Trent Meacham kills Minnesota. He had over 20 in their win at Minneapolis earlier this year and another 20+ game today.
4. I was so happy that the senior's were able to go out on a winning note. Walk-on Chris Hicks hit a 3 at the buzzer that was his first field goal of the year. After the game he said wearing an Illinois jersey and playing at U of I was a dream come true. You love to see that stuff. I could hear the pain in the voices of fellow seniors Brian Randle and Shaun Pruitt. Both feel like they have let the program down with the team's performance this year. Pruitt even apologized to fans for missing the free throws against IU. My heart ached when I heard that. I hope these guys make a run in the tournament and win a couple games to gain a sense of achievement for this season. A lot of things went wrong and it wasn't all their fault. They deserved better than this.
5. Things are shaping up for another UI-IU showdown in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. Winning that game would go a long way to heal some wounds from this season.

And losing it would only make the wound deeper. And I like the thought of that.
Naturally though, Illinois will play their best game of the season......that McCamey kid will make a comeback after shooting something like 15% over the last 4 or 5 games and score 33 points all from downtown.

I don't see anything in that article that is untrue. Guenther is a smart guy who is sticking by his coach and trying to get some stadium projects done before he retires. What's the problem?

Illinois beats Penn State by one in the first round of the B10 Tournament.
Chester Taylor shows us that he's been there before and jumps on the scorers table to celebrate...

It's Chester Fraizer and that was a stupid/classless thing to do. However, it's been a long season... and he has been there before... they beat IU in last year's tournament. My thoughts on the game today... 1. I couldn't believe my eyes in the 1st half when Illinois hit 9 of 10 free throws and were 6-12 from long range. Still, after taking an 11 point lead they allowed the lead to dwindle to 2 at the break. 2. They came out and played well at the start of the 1st half pumping the lead back up to 8 which was pleasant, but then the collapse that seems to be routine in every game happened. Penn State took the lead and I thought "here we go again." Then out of nowhere PSU leaves Chet wide open and he actually makes a lay-up. 3. Brian Randle played a great game (17 points) but he just can't stay out of foul trouble. 4. Meacham is going to have to continue to shoot well if the Illini are going to have a shot vs. Purdue. It was good to finally get a win in a close game. You obviously can tell that this team and its fanbase are snake-bitten. We needed this win.

Just wait until next year when your team is made up of a bunch of nobody's.

Chicago Simeon and Illini recruit Stan Simpson beat Champaign Central and their stud Verdell Jones (likely headed to play for Tubby at Minnesota) 51-46 in the 2nd 3A semifinal today. Simpson had 16 points 6 rebounds and a few blocks for the two-time defending state champion Wolverines. Simeon will move on to the championship tomorrow to face Chicago Marshall while Champaign Central will take on Matt Roth and Washington in the consolation game. '09 Illini recruit Joseph Bertrand won the state's 3A dunk competition today. He is really long and athletic. It may take a redshirt year for him to put on some lbs. but he should be a solid player down the road for Bruce Weber and Illinois.
