Alright here's my outlook going into the Dodgers series:
Positives: -The majority of the players should be rested going into the postseason after a long season up to this point. -Ted Lilly has been pitching his best baseball of the season lately which will be great news in Game 4. -Rich Harden has been dominating since joining the Cubs rotation -Aramis Ramirez was red-hot in September batting .342 -Ryan Theriot has broken out of his recent funk with 4 multi-hit games in his last 5 starts -RF/1B Micah Hoffpauir has shown great ability with the bat recently batting .342. He would be my choice to replace Darryl Ward as the left-handed bat off the bench -The Dodgers rotation isn't incredibly deep. They have two standout starters in Lowe and Billingsly, and they do have bulldog Greg Maddux back there, but he won't go until at least Game 4 if at all in the series. -The Dodgers bullpen will be short-handed with the loss of key set-up man Hong-Chih Kuo (2.14 ERA) who LA has announced won't be pitching in the series due to injury.
Concerns: -Geovany Soto and Mark DeRosa, two key players in the Cubs line-up are nursing injuries. DeRosa's calf injury could prevent him from playing RF where he has been a solid option with the struggles of Fukudome. It forces him to play 2B and limits his range as well as limiting the playing time of Mike Fontenot who has been solid there this month. Soto's hand injury is just as troubling. If he can't go the Cubs lineup is severely depleted. -Carlos Zambrano's recent struggles. Honestly I would have pitched him in Game 4 the way that Harden and Lilly are pitching -The bullpen. After a solid year, they have been sketchy as of late -Manny Ramirez. He has been the best hitter in the NL since coming over to LA at the trade deadline. Don't let him beat you
My prediction... Cubs in 4. We win games 1, 3, and 4.

The Cubs are taking Pie to the postseason, but not Hoffpauir. www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-080930-felix-pie-micah-hoffpauir-chicago-cubs,0,1068092.story Honestly, I think taking Pie is a good move simply for his speed. He could be a valuable pinch-runner and defensive replacement late in games. However, I think that Hoffpauir should be there over Ward. What does Ward offer that Hoffpauir doesn't? With Ward you are forced to pinch run if he gets on base, where as with Hoffpauir you could wait to use Pie at a more advantageous spot. Also... if Bob Howry gets into a game that is within 3 runs either way I'm going to go ballistic. He is the worst pitcher known to man right now yet Lou goes to him in meaningful situations time and time again. I simply can't fathom it. He's not the same pitcher he was a couple years ago Lou! Get it through your skull!

Worst pitcher known to man? I dare say the Pirates have several that could lay a better claim to that title than Howry. So there!

Here's a great article on my beloved... sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AhxscpnreQY6ZXRTnHK94II5nYcB?slug=ge-cubs093008&prov=yhoo&type=lgnsIt's long, but it's a dang good read. Here are some of my favorite excerpts: Alfonso Soriano began his career as a Yankee, and likens being a Cub to wearing pinstripes. But this never happened in Yankee Stadium.
“There are two old ladies,” he says. “Every day they’re there in left field. If it’s a hot day, they’ll bring a [spray] bottle full of cold water for me. They’re like my grandmothers.”
_______________
Ned Colletti, the Dodgers general manager, grew up in the shadow of O’Hare Airport. He adored the Cubs and left a job as a hockey writer for a Philadelphia newspaper to take a job in the Cubs’ public relations department, his entry into a 25-year front-office career.
“All of my uncles on my dad’s side were great baseball fans,” Colletti says. “There’s only one left.”
That would be Uncle Frank, who is 75. In the fall of 1945, Frank’s older brothers went to Wrigley Field to score tickets and watch the Cubs play the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Frank desperately wanted to go, but as the youngest, he was left behind. Next time, he was told.
He’s still waiting. Ned took his uncle to Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS in 2003.
“And it was like another one of his brothers had passed,” Ned says of Frank. “It was brutal.”
______________________
Andy Pafko is 89. He’s the last living Cub to have played in the ‘45 Series.
“I’m so old I can’t remember,” says a cheery Pafko, who isn’t too old to have sung “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch a couple of times at Wrigley.
“It was just a thrill for a young kid to be in the World Series. I played in the World Series for three different teams. The Cubs, the Dodgers and the Braves. Guys like Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, they never got to play. I played for three. How lucky can a guy get?”

I'm sorry that all of your teams are horrible and all you have in life is reveling in your rivals failures.
The Cubs choked. They did. There's no two ways about that, but they still won another NL Central Title and the Reds finished 20 or so games out. Well done!

Peavy to the Cubs? You can never have enough top-shelf starting pitchers and Peavy would certainly be a great addition to Zambrano, Dempster, Harden, and Lilly. www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=245654

I'm not sure how trading is buying. If you make smart deals like the Cubs have in the past few years, you only improve your team. Derrek Lee for Hee-Sop Choi... Aramis Ramirez for Jose Hernandez and spare parts... Rich Harden and Chad Guaden for 3 prospects... on and on. Hendry has made some great moves.

Well... I think the possible addition of a former Cy Young winner is note worthy don't you?
