John Boyd, Michigan City's basketball coach, is doing some good things in his two years at MC. I read this in the SB Tribune today...
High school boys basketball: Michigan City geared toward longevity
By MATT KOPSEA
A visit to the fountain of youth turned out to be quite refreshing for the Michigan City boys basketball team.
Helped along by 6-foot-5 freshman Keenan Simmons and 6-0 classmate Donovan Wilson, the Wolves (8-8) evened their record this past weekend with hard-fought road wins at rival LaPorte (66-64, OT) and Adams (52-48).
With just nine total games of varsity experience between them, the duo combined for 35 points in the two games.
“We saw a lot of potential in both Keenan and Donovan. That’s why they’re both up here (on varsity),” said Michigan City coach John Boyd. “Right now, we’re just trying to mix and match our players to give us the best chance to win. We don’t want to have to rely on one or two guys to carry the load. We want all 12 guys to be able to come in and contribute when called upon.”
Along with Simmons (8.1 points per game) and Wilson (6.5), 6-2 senior Alajowon Edwards (11.1) and 6-1 classmate Shereff Knight (7.1) have also stepped up offensively.
In his second season with the Wolves, Boyd has brought with him a winning attitude. During his previous stop at Gary West, Boyd guided the Cougars to the 2001-02 Class 4-A state title.
“We’re not looking to be good this year and maybe the next,” Boyd said. “Our focus is building longevity. That’s why we’re giving some of our younger kids an opportunity to play right now. We don’t want to be like some teams that have to reload every couple of years. We want to be a program that will contend for Duneland (Conference) and sectional titles now and for years to come.”
