COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police say an Ohio State football recruit Jamel Turner is in critical condition and a 17-year-old girl is dead after both were shot multiple times early Saturday morning in Youngstown.
Turner, a defensive end who played high school ball at Ursuline High School in his native Youngstown, signed with the Buckeyes in February.
Coach Jim Tressel issued a statement Saturday night saying, "I'm so sad to hear of Jamel's misfortune. I have not communicated with Jamel, but am certainly praying for him at this time."
Turner was ruled academically ineligible before graduating from Ursuline, and enrolled at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, where he played football last fall. But he left the academy earlier this year.

This is such a sad situation, and is actually the second time Turner has been shot in the past two months. I don't expect this kid to ever go to college, but I just hope his life is saved and it has turned his life around.

Hanging out with the wrong crowd. They haven't released much info on this case, but the first case he was the passenger in a car where the driver was being targeted. I don't think the driver got hit, but Turner got hit in the leg and was released from the hospital the next day. Now, Turner is in stable condition and will more than likely survive the shooting. As recent as last night, he was 'hour-to-hour'.
In positive OSU news: -Possible 6th year LB/CB/S Tyler Moeller has been cleared for full-contact after undergoing head surgery following being sucker-punched at a family gathering in Florida. The assailant was not a relative and has been found guilty, but not sentenced. - 3 Star, 6'1 175lb WR Devin Smith out of Masillon, OH has committed to the Buckeyes. Smith becomes the 15th commitment for the Buckeyes for the 2011 class. - Football and Men's Basketball both achieved their highest APR score ever. Football was second in the Big Ten with a score of 968, only behind Northwestern. Men's and women's tennis both scored perfect scores of 1,000.

I am sad to hear that this kid lost his life
However hopefully this is a wake-up call to at least a few of these athletes who think that they are invinceble since they are "big time". Hanging out with thugs will get you in trouble eventually
I think Tressel has done a great job since MC of recruiting mostly stand-up kids. This in my mind is not a black eye for the program because he was technically not enrolled in Columbus and I suspect he was never going to end up playing at OSU......sad story

Future Buckeye Christian Bryant of Cleveland Glenville scored on a 26-yard touchdown reception with just over a minute remaining to put Ohio up over Pennsylvania 16-15 in Big 33 game last night in Hershey. Team Ohio would go on to add a two point conversion for the final 18-15 victory, the state’s second in a row.
Fellow Buckeye recruit Verlon Reed of Marion Franklin picked up his second-straight all-star game MVP award after throwing for 55 yards and scoring on a 74-yard run.

Its always good to win the Big 33 Game. I remember in like the 90's I believe it was when Ohio could never beat Pennsylvania in that game. I got on the Big 33 website and it is a pretty cool thing with what they do. The FCA is involved also. SOOOOOOO ready for football season! If OSU can get by Miami (FL) HUIRG is going to be booking him and I tickets to the BCS NCG!!!!!

Duron Carter enrolled in a JuCo recently to try to improve his academic standing. He was ineligible for the Rose Bowl. Hopefully, he can get his grades up and transition back to OSU nicely. I had (have) high hopes for this kid.

OSU football: Son will be back, Carter says Wednesday, June 23, 2010 02:52 AM By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Cris Carter took his son Duron out of Ohio State and enrolled him at Coffeyville Community College in southeastern Kansas this week. The trip alone, Cris Carter said, was a solid teaching point.
"Getting off the plane in Tulsa, and driving up to and living in Coffeyville? That is no trip to South Beach," he said.
He picked Coffeyville for that reason. His son, blessed with many of the exceptional football skills that helped make his father one the elite receivers the game has seen, had a poor first year academically at Ohio State. From being declared ineligible for the Rose Bowl, to struggling to stay in school because of an undisciplined approach to academics, it was time for a change, said Cris Carter, who added that Coffeyville specializes in helping the athlete who has trouble in the classroom.
"I and Duron's mother want nothing more than any other parents want for their 18- or 19-year-old kid," Cris Carter said. "Grow up. Be responsible. Make a contribution. Be a giver in life, not a taker."
OSU receivers coach Darrell Hazell reinforced that point.
"Right now, he's got to be concerned about being consistent, day to day," Hazell said. "Today is the most important day for him."
Cris Carter said he is determined to see his son earn his Associate in Arts degree in nine months.
"Then, in even the worst case scenario, he's going to have a two-year degree," Cris Carter said. "Everybody else is talking football and things, but I know life. I played football at its highest level, and I know life goes on longer than that. He's not going out there for just one semester and then coming right back."
If Duron Carter earns a degree, he will have the option to transfer to any school for the last two years of college, and Cris Carter said there's already been considerable interest. But he also pointed out that he went to OSU as did his wife, and their daughter Monterae, about to be a senior at Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is committed to play soccer at OSU.
"We're Buckeyes, man," Cris Carter said. "He will get re-recruited, but right now Duron's family's plan is for him to re-enroll at Ohio State next June."

Yes this kid has talent but as an educator I don't give a dang about football if he is not taking advantage of a great education. And I love Chris Carter and I think it is great that he is doing this for his son but if this was just another poor kid from the projects turned great football player he would be ruined as a man. Duron take advantage of this oppurtunity. Columbus would love to have you back if you become a man.

Yes this kid has talent but as an educator I don't give a dang about football if he is not taking advantage of a great education. To be fair, he did just attend a school that graduates only 53% of their players. My guess is that he's not at all concerned about his education.
