Great game tonight in Houston. Geovonny Soto with a inside-the-park 3-run home run, Edmonds with an incredible over-the-shoulder catch in centerfield, Marmol with a couple of huge outs in the 8th including a strikeout of red-hot Lance Berkman, and Aramis Ramirez with a 2-run shot to seal it in the 9th. This team is good and continue to impress as they open up their lead over the rest of the NL Central. I'm really enjoying watching them this year. Oh and bad news for Huntingtonfan... the Cubbies come to Pittsburgh later in the week for the 4th series this season between the two teams. The Cubs are 8-1 in the 9 games played thus far.

The Cubs are the perennial darling of MLB. Perhaps given the huge disappointment the Tigers have been so far this season, I'll appoint myself an honorary Cubs fan just so I can have a winning team to cheer for.

What's their record the last 20 games? 12-8. Isn't it amazing that we can go through a horrible slump and still be two games ahead of St. Louis? I'm sure you're not looking at the standings much being a Reds fan but we're ahead of your Dusty Baker-led squad by 7 games now.

Reds are one of the hottest teams in Baseball right now....so yes I have been looking.
But I believe it has been all of you Cubs fans for the past three years telling me (When the Reds had usually led the division the first few months) IT'S ONLY MAY.
Speaking of which, the Reds have had arguably the toughest May schedule in the League....
0-3 Vs. Atlanta 2-1 Vs. Chicago (1st Place NL Central) 1-2 Vs. Mets (2nd Place NL East) 3-0 Vs. Marlins (1st Place NL East) 3-0 Vs. Indians (Were 1st Place AL Central)

Anybody listen to Mike and Mike this morning. Greeny was going off about superstitions and such. I am very superstitious when it comes to baseball stuff. So as a non-Cub fan I am sorry to tell you that posting about teams success on this board will only hurt your team.
Did you see the threads, The Tigers only one game under .500 or the Pirates in 1st place.
As Cub fans you guys should understand this kind of stuff.

My favorite part was when Golic's wife emailed at told Greeny that Northwestern called and wanted their diploma back.

Oh and bad news for Huntingtonfan... the Cubbies come to Pittsburgh later in the week for the 4th series this season between the two teams. The Cubs are 8-1 in the 9 games played thus far. If it weren't for the Pirates, the Cubs would be below .500, wouldn't they? I think you should be sending me envelopes full of cash in gratitude. Just remember, as woeful as the Pirates are and have been for the last 15 years, just two years ago they finished ahead of the overpriced Cubs. And, as someone else noted, it is only May. The Cubs will fold, Zambrano will have more meltdowns (like Saturday, when he broke his bat over his knee after striking out, and then promptly got knocked out of the game by failing to retire the first five batters of the fifth inning), Kerry Wood will blow some more saves, Sweet Lou will implode, and you'll have to man up on this board while Feller and I mock you mercilessly. ;D ;D ;D

And they play my Jays soon in Toronto, so I'm hoping to go to a game in that series.

If it weren't for the Pirates, the Cubs would be below .500, wouldn't they? False. They would be 19-16. I think you should be sending me envelopes full of cash in gratitude. Wishful thinking. But if this scenario would be flipped I would gladly accept! Just remember, as woeful as the Pirates are and have been for the last 15 years, just two years ago they finished ahead of the overpriced Cubs. That's what injuries can do. The whole pitching staff missed time that year, and the '05 MVP runner-up Derrek Lee broke his wrist in early May. I believe that injuries would be the only thing that could keep this '08 team from a Central Division title. The playoffs are a different issue. And, as someone else noted, it is only May. The Cubs will fold, Zambrano will have more meltdowns (like Saturday, when he broke his bat over his knee after striking out, and then promptly got knocked out of the game by failing to retire the first five batters of the fifth inning), Kerry Wood will blow some more saves, Sweet Lou will implode, and you'll have to man up on this board while Feller and I mock you mercilessly. ;D ;D ;D It's funny how this didn't happen last year. In fact the Cubs were awful in April and then kept getting better as the season progressed. The playoffs are a different issue. I'm not convinced this team has the pitching to win in the playoffs. The only starters that have been consistently good this year are Zambrano and Dempster and I doubt Dempster is winning more than 13-15 games this year (which is fantastic coming from him). Lilly is nice and has had a solid May (4-0), but is he really a solid #2? The Cubs still need one more solid starting pitcher who can handle the pressure of the playoffs for me to breathe somewhat easy going into October. The bullpen is rough. Wood has shown that he can be erratic at times, Howry has been brutal, and I don't think there is any guy in that pen that I trust to get tough outs other than Marmol. He has been lights out, but he has been used a ton. We need our starters to pickup a couple of complete games so Marmol and Wood can get some rest and be sharp come September/October. So basically, come the trading deadline the Cubs need to pilfer the Pirates like they did in '03 stealing Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton for peanuts. I'm confident Hendry will pull it off.

Well.....for the first time in many years.....I can say that the Reds have a better pitching staff (minus David Freaking Weathers) than the Cubs!
It's progress ........ Now if they could just spend as much money on the rest of the team. Although the team is in great position looking forward. I will begin my Jay Bruce talk within the next few weeks.

I don't know if I'd call it "better." I'd take the Cubs pitching over the Reds going into the playoffs. There is still a lot of youth there that, unless you're Josh Beckett, doesn't exactly bode well in October. However, if we're talking about who has a better base for the future? It's the Reds hands down. Now it's a matter of whether or not they will pony up the $ to keep all of those young studs.
