I don't think Flynn ever played D1 bball that I can recall. I do think, at least some years ago, that there was a bias in favor of southern Indiana players. You mean the Mike Flynn that played at KENTUCKY and 3 years in the ABA/NBA??? He got Mr. Basketball over notables as Pete Trgovich and Junior Bridgman from State Champion E.C. Washington

I didn't remember til you mentioned it that he went to Kentucky. I guess it's a 'pride' thing of where you live in the state. I know at the time the decision for Mr. Basketball was not very popular up here. Flynn was not nearly as well known as the guys you mentioned and others who played up north. I'm sure the same would have been true down south the other way around.
I don't want to argue this thing, I just don't think that Flynn was the quality player of Trgovich (UCLA) and Bridgman (Louisville) and others who didn't win. I didn't mean to imply he wasn't good, but I don't know he didn't get preferential votes by where he lived. The 2 EC Washington stars may have cancelled each other out with votes split between them. Just guessing.

I can't argue who was better as I never saw him play. I'm a region guy anyway so I wonder how much(if at all) better than Bridgeman or Trgovich he was anyway.

Until recent times....it seems that the voters only considered you if you were from Indianapolis...or played in the North Central Conference. 1. Anderson 2. Marion 3. Muncie Central 4. Kokomo 5. Lafayette Jeff 6. Richmond 7. New Castle 8. Logansport I grew up just in the middle of all these towns....and based on the size of the gyms....the number of state championships in the conference....and the Mr. Basketballs - there really wasn't anything bigger/better from my point of view. Unless of course you were my Alexandria Tigers going into the Wigwam and sticking it to Anderson in Sectional!

Would Zach Randolph be considered for this list if not for his off court issues? I've heard if it wasn't for his off the court troubles then he probably would have won Mr. Basketball. He then won a state championship his senior year, and was MVP of the McDonalds All American game. I've heard he had some big off court issues, but regardless, he's one of the better players to come from Marion and he seems to have had the success of a lot of these other guys..

1. Anything that happens in the McDonalds All-American game means nothing. It's an All-Star game....there is no defense. However, I do think that BEING NAMED to the team is the biggest honor in High School Basketball, besides Indiana Mr. Basketball . 2. Zach Randolph was sensational in High School. Had it not been for his off court issues, he could've been a two or three time state champion. With that in mind, the year that he missed while in Juvenile hall, the Marion Chronicle Tribune refused to give out the County Player of the Year award....because "Zbo" wasn't playing. Which ticked me off.... 3. Had he not been in trouble...and had another season to accumulate his numbers....and won another state title, there is no question that he'd be a top 10 all-time guy in Indiana. But he was in trouble...didn't accumulate great numbers....so he's not.
