Here's a write-up from my former boss Greg Jones at the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette:
Probably sooner than expected, but the Al Rhodes experiment at Northrop is over.
After only one year.
The future Hall of Fame boys basketball coach announced his resignation in a statement Wednesday.
"I have decided to pursue other basketball opportunities that have presented themselves,â Rhodes said in the written statement. âWe have made great strides with the program and the future is very bright."
Rhodes was 10-12 last season. He is 454-192 in 27 years of coaching at Northrop, Warsaw and Logansport.
Rhodes was in an unfamilar situation from the start. He came from the single-community high schools of Warsaw and Logansport, and never fully grasped the sometimes chaotic open-enrollment of Fort Wayne Community Schools.
Players that you see coming up in middle schools won't always enroll at the high school you expect as a coach.
That's probably not the only reason Rhodes stepped down, but it goes to show how Northrop and Rhodes were never a good fit.

"I fully support Coach Rhodes in his decision to step down as Northrop's coach. I know Northrop will miss him, because he's one of the best coaches in the state. The dedication, attention to detail, passion, enthusiasm, love for people, and for helping and serving others will suit Coach well in whatever opportunities he has. I want to say publicly here on the Internet that Coach Rhodes is one of my heroes! I will always fully support him no matter what he does, and I am looking forward to seeing what his next endeavor will be. I have enjoyed following Coach Rhodes's basketball teams since his days at my high school, Warsaw.

Any rumors about A. Rhodes being HN's next AD? (or did I just start one) As long as we can start rumors....maybe he will become the next head coach of the Penn Kingsmen.

Next coach at Penn? Works for me. He graduated from Penn just ahead of me. It would be a fitting way to end a great coaching career. He was mentored by Jim Miller, who we've talked about elsewhere, but he was one of the best so Rhodes was a step ahead of the pack for coaching readiness when he left high school.
Just one little problem. Penn has a mighty good coach right now, I don't know if Dean Foster wants to step aside.

I heard he won't be working with the youngsters this year during the summer camp. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
