By any chance, is the Doug Noll any relation to Mark Noll, author of The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind?

the 1995 NAIA national championship game won by Bethel will be aired on WHME on June 6 at 11PM and June 7 at 9AM. Is this available on the internet, or just on local TV?

Doug and Mark Noll are not related. Doug was from Berne, played at South Adams High School and then accepted a full ride to Wyoming. After one season he transferred to Grace and lasted all of one week. He left and went to sell shoes in a Mall in Ft. Wayne. After getting tired of smelling people's feet, he went back to Grace and became the star of their teams. Later he coached at Spring Arbor and the at IPFW. He was the coach who led them to become NCAA Division I and had a great graduation rate for his players. His problem was they did not win enough as they traveled literally all over the country since it was hard to get home games. He now works for Youth For Christ and conducts clinics. His daughter was a great player for Bethel who graduated a year ago. Doug and his wife Carla are great people!

Nope, but it will be followed by a broadcast of CU's 99 championship game win over Bethel. In the interest of equal time. I get all of our national championships mixed up. Was this the one where they said Andy Ganger stepped out of bounds as he nailed a three?

Was this the one where they said Andy Ganger stepped out of bounds as he nailed a three? Oh, I can help you out here. You see, you DIDN'T win this National Championship! And we've got the banner and the trophy to prove it. That's because, you see, Ganger DID step out of bounds. That's why the official said he did - and he was much closer to the play than any Pilot (or Golden Eagle, for that matter) was. (And there is photographic proof of that fact, but never mind - nothing can convince you; you guys have made that very clear.) For crying out loud, it's been nearly 10 years! And you lost! Get over it already! I mean seriously - I've had some great conversations with a lot of Pilot fans. But there are an awful lot of you who can crow 24/7 about your "Bethel Dynasty" and "Defend the Legacy" and all that, but when you lose arguably the greatest game in NAIA D2 history (officials' calls, missed layups, turnovers, made free throws, etc. notwithstanding), can you congratulate the other team? Appparently not! And please don't give me this "CU was a deserving champion, but Bethel got hosed!" nonsense - that kind of statement is the very definition of "oxymoron." And that's what I find so disappointing and frustrating. Now I know some of you will accuse me of "going off" here - because you've done it before, and you know who you are. But hey...it is what it is. I think you guys who know me realize that I say what's on my mind, and for all the fun I have interacting with you Bethel guys, this is one thing that really frustrates me. Just being honest, that's all.

CU, I think we can both agree that neither team deserved to lose that specific game...but that's not how it works. Congrats on your win! It would be nice to have 4 red banners hanging in Wiekamp. You can't win them all. But props to BC that year who made it back to the championship game without Ricoooo Swanson. normally it would be difficult to respond after such a talented athlete has left. they took the #1 team into overtime and into the last seconds....either way, CU won...and Bethel is gonna give it one heck of a run next season! lookin forward to it!

Hey CUfan, I honestly meant to put a smiley or wink after that post. I was just kind of horsing around. The joke was supposed to be the part about "I get so confused with all of our national championships." Sorry to stir the pot. I have certainly let that game go. We lost. You won (obviously). That's one thing I remember about that game was saying "Man, Cornerstone has got to miss a free throw at some point." And you never did. You guys were money down the stretch. As you and Robbie both mentioned. Phenomenal game. I haven't been around this forum long, so I apologize. L-Train

As I have said before, CU has my 5th favorite men's basketball program. It puts a smile on my face to recall the 99 NAIA Division II championship.

Thanks for the posts, guys. I honestly have stayed away from this site for 5 days since I posted above, in part out of frustration, but in part because I think I probably overreacted, and for that I apologize as well. As I said, I've had some great conversations with a lot of Pilot fans - so I by no means want to indict all of you/them. And I also realize that there is a huge emotional investment in both winning and losing - in this case, the team that thought they had won lost, and the team that thought they had lost, actually won. I can't describe the emotional catapult I felt over those couple of seconds between watching the ball go in the basket, and then seeing the official wave off the bucket. And I may know as much about the two programs as anyone on the planet, given my unique "situation" vis a vis BC and CU.
Losing is never easy - especially when you have become used to winning. Staying home from Branson this year, after going for 7 years in a row (and for me, going 6 years in a row to broadcast/webcast the games), was for me an excrutiating experience. I only hope we can make it back there next year. And wouldn't it be something if BC and CU met at some point in Branson, on the 10th "anniversary" of the '99 game?
I have no doubt Bethel is the favorite to repeat in the MCC and get back to Branson. As for CU, we will certainly be as good as we were last year, when we came within a game of securing an automatic berth to Branson, and maybe a bit better? With addition of Possehl, Yoder, and hopefully that one other guy we are going after (please!!!), we might be tougher than a lot of people expect. We should find out early on, as we kick off the season against Saint Xavier at the Trinity Christian tournament.

CUfan, If CU doesn't make it to Branson this coming season and Bethel does I think you should grab your son, take some time off work and root for the Pilots (as difficult as it may be) with me. I'll even give you a Bethel shirt.
p.s. It was good talking basketball with you this past Saturday!!! I enjoyed it

Thanks, Robbie. Go to Branson, wear a Bethel shirt, and cheer for the Pilots? Hmm...I'm not sure about that one. Loyalty is a big, big thing to me. But I can certainly wish you guys well if you make it, which I'm sure you will. I certainly would love for Steve and Carrie to experience Branson - there's nothing like it. I've encouraged them to go, and perhaps you can do the same thing.

they won't show CU or Grace because nobody cares around here (I'm sure there were literally dozens of Bethel fans watching last night)
I did watch the pilots win last night (for those of you who are not CU, Grace, or Bethel fans--to win a NAIA national championship means you're the last unbeaten team left in the tournament)
All kidding and trash aside, the game was different than I remembered. NWN was a dirty team--Rico got beat up on illegal screens and lots of elbows and pushing off by the Crusaders. Our comeback was not as dramatic as I remember. Bethel played erratically and somehow won. Jody Goralski remains one of my favorite pilots.

I think the Bethel Athletic Dept. should release a DVD with the National Championship games on it - for those of us not in the Mishawaka area -- they could do even do it as part of a fundraiser if need be.
I'd certainly purchase one and am pretty certain plenty of other fans would too. I'm sure they could make it available through mail-order with the Bethel magazine and in the Bethel bookstore (much like the Chapel Band CD's)
just a thought

Just being honest, that's all. Take a deep breath--now exhale slowly. There, that's better. Okay, I think the worst thing the officials did was not call two fouls at the end of the game. One against Bales and another against Ganger (he was pushed--that's why he was near the line). And WHME might show the game--but i doubt it. Plenty of other big Bethel wins to choose from.
