Last-minute heroics gave the Bethel College men's basketball team a 69-62 victory over archrival Grace College as the Pilots finished the game on a 12-0 run Saturday afternoon inside the Wiekamp Athletic Center. The close contest would feature eight ties and 11 lead changes. The Pilots (23-7, 12-6) would struggle shooting the basketball connecting on only 48 percent of their attempts including 11-of-31 (35 percent) in the first half. Additionally, they would hit only two shots from beyond the arc on 18 attempts (11 percent). Despite poor shooting the Pilots would stay in the game by their defensive efforts holding the Lancers (16-13, 8-10) to 35 percent for the game including 29 percent in the second half. Late in the first half Grace would get their largest lead of the game after a basket from Greg Miller to build the Lancers' lead to six (31-25) with just one minute remaining, but Bethel scored the last four points to head into the locker room down 31-29. Bethel would eventually reclaim the lead at 37-36 with 17:40 remaining on a basket from Matt Schauss. Neither team could build more than a one possession lead until Schuss rattled off four-straight to give Bethel their largest lead of the day at seven (52-45) with 10:36 remaining. That's when the Lancers came alive scoring 10 of the next 15 points to gain a 57-55 advantage. Grace's lead would grow to as many as four before the Pilots scored 12 straight to finish the game including a huge three-point play from Matt Schauss. Schauss would continue his solid play scoring a game-high 25 points while hauling down six rebounds and distributing four assists. In his last three games the 6-4 junior is averaging 26.3 points per outing. Seniors Ryan Benner and Patrick Oetting would add 12 points, respectively. Benner would grab a team-best eight boards while Oetting had six. Landon Booker would provide a great boost off the bench to provide 10 points, three assists and two steals. The win earns the Pilots the No. 4 seed in the Crossroads League tournament where they will host No. 5 Marian University on Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00pm.
