I realize, again, that this is far and away a CL board, despite its name. But I would like to begin a thread on candidates for WHAC POY. Here are my thoughts for the candidates, and a possible winner. I welcome any input from anyone - whether WHAC or CL fan.
Bobby Naubert - Madonna. The reigning WHAC POY has had some great games - 34 points vs. CU in an 84-77 loss, among others - so he has to be a serious candidate. He can score, rebound, steal, and secure key rebounds - not bad for a 5'10 guy. As quick as anyone in the league.
Dominez Burnett - Davenport. He leads the WHAC in scoring at 19.5 ppg. When he is on, he is as unstoppable as anyone in the conference. He did receive a 2 game suspension for getting into a fight vs. Lourdes - whether that might hurt his chances, who knows?
Wes Hudson - Cornerstone. AT 19.4 ppg, he is just 1/10 of a point per game behind Burnett. An excellent defender - a truly complete player. He put CU on his back in the second UNOH game, scoring 39, a career high by 10.
Zach Steinmetz - Lourdes. A freshman center, he leads the WHAC in rebounds with 10.5 per game. He has had several double-doubles this year, and though Lourdes has some truly ugly losses (@ Lawrene Tech and @ UM Dearborn), he has been consistently good all year.
Ed Jenkins - UNOH. This guy can just light up the scoreboard. He dropped 40 on CU in an 84-79 loss, and has had games in the 20's. He tends to be one dimensional - predominantly a scorer and not much of a rebounder or defender.
Rontray Chavis - the dominant player on a Warriors team that has struggled at times. Only 6'5, but he plays bigger - scores inside and a great rebounder. Without him, Indiana Tech would be significantly less competitive.
For me, the leading 3 are Naubert, Burnett, and Hudson. Often this kind of award goes to the player whose team has the best record, especially if that team wins a championship. So if CU can win the WHAC, then I have to believe Hudson would be the favorite. But any of the other two guys would be deserving recipients.
Any thoughts?
