There have been so many sides of this story coming out. I watched the interview on ESPN of him. Seems he was hoaxed. But, who really knows the truth...

He is a young man who, as I understand it, has graduated from ND in 3 1/2 years, no small feat. I believe he may have done so as an honor student. When you listen to him, he is quiet, laid back and humble. He has a strong faith. He comes from a background of loving but not wealthy parents and family. Between his time put in on studies to accomplish the above and the demands to be a top notch football player, I just don't see that he had the time to perpetrate what he is accused of. I think he was gullible, fell for it hook, line and sinker. He was trusting as his background raised him to be, rather naive would be my guess. His shyness would have allowed him to much easier connect on-line with a young woman, plus it took much less time, time he would not have as referred to above because of other demands. He is a compassionate young man, and this guy in Hawaii (Tuiassossiope sp.?) knew him well enough to set him up, and Manti fell for it. His parents, so it seem, are guilty to the point that they helped build the image, as they did not really see the girl, as reported.
Manti has been introduced to the real world, and as a pro player, it will get even worse, with many reaching out a hand and wanting much from him. Sadly, this gentle young man must learn to become cynical and mistrusting, like most of us. That's the sad thing to me.
Of course, I could be all wrong, then I'm the gullible one.

both he and ND kept it quiet for a while and he even played along like she was real even after he knew otherwise--if everyone had been more open, no controversy would exist. wish everyone would let it go--it's been front page news in the South Bend Trib for a while, even today

What of the reports that he and his father said that they met at a Stanford game as a freshmen, and she joined him in Hawaii on breaks...I think the whole story is silly, but he certainly was not honest about everything.

To paint him as totally innocent in all of this is extremely foolish IMO. Best case scenario, he found out about it early and was too embarrassed to come clean about it and kept perpetuating the lie. Why else would he be so foggy on the details of when she died (giving different days in different interviews)? All of this is incredibly bizarre and frankly uninteresting.

I had a friend who was in an airport in Turkey and noticed the story being told on Al Jezeera. Truth is stranger than fiction (a reference to The Wittenberg Door--anyone remember that mag?)

I think he comes from a background that had him totally unprepared for all of this fame. He has badly bungled, and may have lied on some issues. I think he was totally hoaxed, as I said before due to his naivety. At any rate, sure will be glad when this becomes a non-issue. We need another good controversy springing up in the world of sports and we'd move on.

how is he naive--not like he was not a super star in HI and also played for a very high profile program -- he was on TV all the time and had an army of handlers at ND
