I think it's a very wise move and honestly it's what's best for not only Rutgers and Maryland, but the entire B1G Ten conference. I listened to those blowhards Greenberg and Pearl complain about it between bball games last night saying it "wasn't in the best interest of the student-athlete" because of the travel involved. What those two don't understand is that by adding the DC/Baltimore and more importantly the NY/NJ markets to the B1G Ten Network, the league doubles their annual payout to each B1G school from somewhere around $20 million to upwards of $45 million. Some of you say... that's just the rich getting richer. False. Maryland had to cut 7 athletic programs last year because of lack of funding. Now they'll be able to bring those programs back. Likewise, the Iowa's, Illinois', and Indiana's of the world won't have to worry about cutting any of their athletic programs either and may be able to expand if they so choose. It may not be what you'd hope for as far as rivalries are concerned, but new one's will be made. Contrary to what Bruce Pearl may say, this IS in the best interest of the student athlete.

a few more and they'll have to form a ninja division; I guess it will need to start with an L, maybe LE--so, leopards, or learners, or levitators.

I think it will great for basketball to have Maryland there. It just makes the conference stronger. For football I'm not so sure it helps but oh well. I agree with you it's a good for the schools. As far as rivalries go, the good ones will still happen I think, so it won't affect it, especially for basketball when the teams will still most likely all play. I just wonder if they'll ever change the name...

They may phase out the "Ten" and just go with the B1G Conference. I don't see them ever dropping that because of name recognition and branding.

The last thing this deal is about is the best interest of the student/athlete.....if that happens to be a byproduct, then so be it.

It may not be about the student athlete, but it about the school, and financing for the school. That's not a horrible thing to follow I don't think.

Max, you can't deny that this will keep lesser sports like golf, gymnastics, and tennis from being cut. Athletic budgets are tight all across America, but TV money helps keep them running.

Like tubball fan said - more for the long term health of the school and athletic department as a whole.
We will see over the next few years how many of the sports Maryland reinstates....
Budgets are not tight at the BCS level for most sports....

As the resident hockey enthusiast, I'd like to see what an expanded Big 10 does for hockey. Starting next season, the Big 10 will introduce it's own hockey conference for the first time, starting with 6 schools. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State.

I'd love to see Illinois turn their club team into a NCAA level one. Club hockey games are pretty popular on campus.

I still miss the old days of the SWC in the Cotton bowl, SEC in the Sugar, and the Pac-8 and Big Ten in the Rose Bowl (back when there were about a dozen bowls). Now it's all about money.

You are right it is all about the money and what the school can gain from it. Don't get me wrong I love the bowl season and seeing some school play each other that otherwise never would.
I personally do not like the conferences raiding each other. For example Boise State and San Diego State in the Big East? This really has never made sense to me. Neither Did Missouri to the SEC East. I am a Gamecock fan through and through and I hated them joining. I felt if anything move them to the B1G. At what point does all this stop? Eventually at one point we will only have super conferences.
Any Thoughts?

the longest traditional conference affiliation will end up being ND's non affiliation
