crazy and fun first round--lots of reaches in round one--either they are brilliant or busts--i liked how the draft seemed to move more quickly than usual

Colts second rounder is basically a late first rounder with the number of reaches...They will definitely get someone who can help right away...Fleener or the Center from WI would be very good.

They have Eldridge at TE and that is it...it sounds like that is where they want to build...
I wonder if they would try to pass off Freeney and a later draft pick to get into the top of the second round to get another guy they like, maybe an O-Liner.

4 Illini in the first 48 picks. Most out of any university not named Alabama. That's pretty impressive. It's also that much more frustrating that we only went 7-6 in each of the last 2 seasons. Illinois has had 5 1st round picks in the past 5 years which is one of the top in the B1G Ten. Zook could evaluate and recruit talent. Too bad he couldn't coach it well enough during the games.

I had the same thought about the Illini flying off the board...Seem to have more individual talent than the OSU, Michigan's of the world...interesting.

or that OSU and Michigan return majority of their starters? Naw... that wouldn't make sense.

or that OSU and Michigan return majority of their starters? Naw... that wouldn't make sense. Nope it doesn't make sense because... Illinois returns 6 starters on offense/ 7 starters on defense Michigan returns 5 starters on offense/ 7 starters on defense Ohio State returns 5 starters on offense / 6 starters on defense What's your next excuse incognito? I'd also like to hear you excuse as to why the Illini lead the B1G Ten with 5 1st round draft picks in the last 5 years. Zook was a terrible game-day coach, but he certainly could evaluate talent (of the 4 players selected in this draft 3 were 3 stars and Allen was a 2-star recruit). Depth due to attrition was the main issue, along with Zook's coaching short-comings. Still Illinois should've won more games over the past few years with all of the talent they had.

Not sure where you get your info...
Braxton, Boren, Fields, Brown, Stoneburner, Norwell, and Mewhort = 7. Bellamy, Simon, Goebel, Hankins, Sabino, Shazier, Howard, Roby, Bryant and Barnett= 10.
That's 17 out of a possible 22. Not to mention all of our ST specialists are back this year.
Michigan, I can't remember off the top of my head. I know their qb and rb situation didn't change and they lost Hemingway, Odoms and Koger. I think just Molk on their o-line. On defense, didn't they just lose Van Bergen, Martin, and Woolfolk? If my memory serves me right, that'd be 7 and 8 returners.
The Pats took a 3rd-stringer from the Buckeyes who didn't even play in half of our games whose biggest game was 3 tackles and 1 sack as a safety.
And the Buckeyes have more 1st rounders than the Illini over the past 6 years (see how that works?), not too mention 1/3 more total draft picks than the Illini in the 5 years that you like to use.
I am in no way saying Zook couldn't evaluate talent. All I am saying is just because they have more first rounders or draft picks in 1 year (or even 5 year span) does not mean they have better individual talent. It is making a quick judgment decision without considering all circumstances.
But more 1st rounders the past 5 years is more important than having a total of 48 current NFL players as opposed to 25 players in the NFL...

Anthony gonzalez shouldn't count, because he is terrible.

Illinois has had more top-end talent than both Michigan and Ohio State over the past 5 years, and the draft has displayed that. Those 5 1st rounders in the past 5 years trail only Alabama (11), USC (10), and Florida (6) during that span. That doesn't include the 4 2nd rounders Illinois had during those years (Allen, Wilson, Rejus Benn, Mikel Leshoure) or the 2 3rd rounders (Martez Wilson, Jon Ashmoah). They just didn't have any depth.

And Memphis has had more top 15 picks than Illinois in the past 15 years. Does that mean they have more top-end talent than Illinois? Do you really think 1st round draft pick is the sole judgment on talent? We all know Pryor, Posey, Adams, and Laurinaitis are/were all first round "talents." They weren't taken out of the first round because they didn't have the talent. Why is past 5 years so much more relevant than past 6 years?
