I think it's great. Not only will his son, the one committed to IU, be coming, but he has a son who will be in 8th grade, who according to articles, is also near the top of his class.
I thought it was interesting that there were people upset about the hire. One comment the school board member said on the Chronicle was pointing out that Blackman had been ejected from the last game he was in last year, and wouldn't coach the first game at Marion. He found that embarrassing.
Regardless, I think it's a good hire. Marion should be able to get back on the map once again in terms of basketball prowess. Good move for them.

It's understandable why some of the committee members would want to go through the process and give it a good look.
While Blackmon has proven himself as a coach and player, he has also proven to be irresponsible at times with his behaivor. He was not invited back as an assistant 10 years ago because of a drug charge. Especially after the last coach at Marion was basically dismissed for a DUI charge, the School Board doesn't want to run into another embarrasing hire.
Blackmon was the obvious choice from a basketball standpoint and I'm sure most are hopeful he brings Marion Basketball back to glory.

There are rumors swirling that Blackmon will return to Fort Wayne and Bishop Luers instead of taking the job at Marion High School. He has not worked out a contract and supposedly there are family issues causing him to re-think things.

This is getting pretty interesting... Blackmon is approved to be the coach, comes to the city for a meet and great, and now is having second thoughts. Apparently his family which could include his sons and wife, do not want to move to Marion from Fort Wayne.
IN a basketball crazed town like Marion, if they lose out on Blackmon, and maybe just as importantly his sons, there will be a backlash against the school board, etc. and probably some against Blackmon himself.
If he does return to Fort Wayne, I wouldn't want to be the coach who replaces him as the new Marion head coach. Yikes.

I was shocked by this, but if you really think about it...........not to surprised.
Ft. Wayne is heading one way as a city and Marion is headed the other.

The Chronicle Tribune is reporting that Blackmon will stay in Fort Wayne.
Although I respect the man for making the decision based on what is being reported as family concerns, I personally think it is in the best interest of Marion Basketball to move on and distance themselves from this individual.
While I do not know all the circumstances surrounding the decision (I'm sure most don't), for someone to accept a job, their so-called dream job, and then three weeks later decide it wasn't the right move and flip-flop speaks volumes about the person. We all make mistakes so I won't say it is the biggest mistake he could have made but you would think a person in their 40's or 50's could take the time to make a well-thought out and sound decision and not just say yes and then worry about the consequences later.
This type of half-hazzard decision-making coupled with some of his questionable personal decisions in the past don't scream out to me that he would be a good role-model for the community and someone who would be committed in the long-term of the program.
This is a sizable blow for one of Indiana's premeire high school basketball cities/jobs but I for one think they could have perhaps avoided a potential land-mine down the road by this relationship falling apart now instead of down the road. I think the biggest loss perhaps in this whole deal is losing out on the younger Blackmons playing basketball in Grant County. They seem as potentially talented on the court as their father was.

Blackmon faxed in his resignation on Monday evening.

Will Sherron Wilkerson's high school coach, Mike Broughton, take it next year? Inbnews.com was talking about that on their forum.
