Illinois received 2 more commits in the past 2 days! One from in-state DT Merrick Jackson and another from Ohio DE Jarrod Clements. Both are 3* players. Jackson had offers from Iowa, Missouri, and Indiana while Clements boasted offers from Tennessee, West Virginia, and NC State. They are 2 very solid players who are exactly the type of players Illinois needs to land to build solid depth going forward. Get 15 solid 3* like these guys, a few stud 4*'s who are playmakers, add in a project or two and you've got yourself a class! So far Illinois has 7 commits, the 4* stud in Bailey, 5 3*'s, and an unranked O-lineman who has nice quickness out of his stance. Great recruiting momentum for the Illini right now!

Michigan fans will be really disappointed if the Wolverines don't pull in Treadwell. They have been the presumed leader since the beginning of his recruitment.

Nothing would be sweeter than pulling in an instant impact playmaker on offense and pissing off Meeechigan at the same time! ;D That said, I still get the feeling Treadwell will ultimately end up in Ann Arbor.

That's easy to say when the Hoosiers weren't on Michigan's schedule last year and aren't this year. Considering IU got flattened by every conference opponent and Michigan did more flattening... I think there's not really any fight here. Indiana football is a laughing stock and always will be. Now back to Illinois football... you know a team that's won a bowl in the past decade. ;D

I strongly considered rebutting Feller's poor assumption, but Huisrealgood made a stronger point than I could have. The fact that a Michigan hater could refute Feller's point so easily proves just how silly it is.

Kind of easy when Indiana went 0-8 in the B1G Ten last season losing by an average score of over 24 points a game.

Gameday is only a few short days away and I couldn't be more excited! These early games will go a long way to deciding what the season will look like. Illinois will likely be favored in each of it's 4 non-conference games, but 3 of them should be close including the opener vs a Western Michigan team that is picked to win their side of the MAC. Their QB Alex Carder is a stud and lit our defense up last year, but we still came out on top. Tropical Storm Isaac actually could help derail the Broncos offense as heavy winds and rain are expected in central Illinois Saturday due to the storm. Add to that that this year's defense could be the best we've seen at Illinois in a long, long time as we return 7 starters, but most of those non-starters saw significant minutes last year. Michael Buchanan will anchor a stout D-line, Jonathan Brown will be one of the best LB's in the B1G Ten again this year, and Terry Hawthorne figures to be one of the top CB's. The offense has a ton of question marks, but Nathan Scheelhaase has experience which hopefully will translate into success.
I'm predicting a 7-5 year and hoping for 8-4 as Illinois has a lot of winnable home games as well as two winnable road games vs Arizona State (which lost a ton from last year) and Northwestern who we've beaten 2 years in a row.

Very good start to the season today! Isaac actually held off and there wasn't a drop of rain despite all of my preparations (swimsuit, poncho, change of clothes), which I thought would play into WMU's hands, but it didn't. The defense was dominating, suffocating the Broncos rushing attack which ended up with -6 yards on the ground. The defense also forced 4 turnovers including 3 interceptions, one of which was a pick six.
The offense was... decent if not solid in the first half. Scheelhaase had a long 64 yard TD pass to WR Ryan Lankford to start the game. Beckman actually used a timeout (a foreign concept in the Zook era) to regroup in the 2nd quarter and the ensuing play resulted in a Scheelhaase TD run. Then came the 2nd half... Ugh. Scheelhaase got picked in the end zone and apparently tweaked his ankle on the play and didn't return. Our back-up QB Reilly O'Toole was an embarassment. He just isn't the right fit in our offense and it showed today. We couldn't move the ball at all with him in the game. The season will be an up-hill battle if Scheelhaase misses any time.
That said, the Illini fairly easily disposed of a Western Michigan team that was picked to win it's division in the MAC. The fact that Ohio beat Penn State, Bowling Green nearly knocked off Florida and Northern Illinois nearly beat Iowa makes me feel a whole lot better about a 17 point win.
Overall grades...
Offense with Scheelhaase: B- Offense without Scheelhaase: F Defense: A+ Special Teams: B- (Missed one long FG, made another, punting was so-so, but our punt returner caught all the punts which believe it or not is an upgrade)
Tim Beckman's new era has begun!!!

Well we got clobbered in Tempe Friday... but at least we looked good doing it! I have to look for positives somewhere. Beckman added helmet stickers of the state of Illinois. Blue on the left for on the field performance, and white on the right for off the field performance (grades, citizenship, etc). btn.com/2012/09/12/clothes-call-beckman-adds-helmet-stickers-at-illinois/

Duped again.
This Illinois team is bad in a bad B1G Ten. It's more frustrating because you've seen this same talent do well in the past, but this new coaching staff seems inept at preparing these players and they don't fight at all.
