Nice article from the boston hearald. www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/rob_bradford/index.php/2008/02/12/day-one-in-review/Another interesting guy I talked with was minor league starter Justin Masterson, a person viewed in the organization as one of the best human beings around (and leader in the clubhouse for winning the eventual “Sean Casey Award.”) Masterson explained that his pitching coach in Lancaster, Bob Kipper, truly helped him by simply advising that he throw his sinker (”a two-seamer with the thumb slightly off”) until hitters show they can hit it. “We had gotten in a rut of just throwing, forcing it in there. (Kipper) just told me, ’Your best pitch is your sinker and you go with until the hitter says otherwise,’” explained Masterson. “Once I began implementing that and went with that, it’s almost like a light went on. It’s so simple you’re kicking yourself, thinking how I couldn’t have thought of that myself. “At the end of my sophomore year of college I just somehow found it. In the Cape Cod League it just flourished. People were like, ‘How you do that?’ I told them, ‘I don’t know.’ My four-seam had a natural momvent. It tried to throw the two-seamer, but it was a little bit slower and a little bit straighter. So I was always afraid of it.”

ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jiimtUv-igekuM3WfCs6E2z5MdHAD8UUA6VO0... Francona said Josh Beckett will start against Boston College in the spring opener on Feb. 28 and bright pitching prospect Justin Masterson will pitch against Northeastern that night. The scheduled starters in the three games after that, all against Minnesota, are Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and Tim Wakefield. Not bad for J-mast to be mentioned along with those 4.

I doubt he cracks the rotation this year with Clay Buchholz, the kid who threw the no-hitter last fall ahead of him, but anything could happen. Masterson might catch on as a long-man in the pen, or he may have to wait his turn until Wakefield's arm falls off.

My favorite line...
"You should hate him. You don't, though. You can't help it."
He really is that great of a guy.

Nice article. He sounds like a great guy that I would love to get a chance to meet sometime. I hope things work out for him in Boston.

Jmast got the start tonight in the Red Sox's night game against Northeastern University. He threw 2 shutout innings, 1 Hit, 17 pitches, 12 of them for strikes...all in all a good night for Mr. Masterson

Here's what Justin said on his blog about the game...
"As for my outing, it was a decently long day to wait and throw only two innings at 6 in the evening. But I did it and I felt fine. It wasn't the greatest outing I've ever had and it wasn't like I was feeling extra good as compared to where I have been. The outing was right on line with the progression that I have been taking, didn't really get a changeup in there, but the slider worked out well for me. My goal coming in was to throw strikes and I feel I accomplished that by only throwing 17 pitches in two innings of work, getting maybe 3 or 4 ground balls, a strike out and a routine fly ball. All in a days work. It wasn't that I was that on top of my game as it was the college hitters were over matched considerably. Which is the idea, so it worked out well. I was happy I didn't embarrass myself or do anything out of the ordinary in a bad sense. Still have things to work on and after my two innings I went down to the bullpen and threw 20 or so more pitches to kind of finish off my day and work in some more changeups, almost as if I was throwing another inning or two. But all the management and everyone seemed to be happy. A little too happy, but maybe they were happy also I didn't make a fool of myself. Because it got the job done, but it is no where near what I can and will be doing throughout the season."

Loucks, do you have a link for his blog?
I think it is really cool that Bethel could have two big leaguers this year.
I also have a question...the article said he left Bethel because they didn't not have a pitching coach, that can't be true can it?

He left Bethel because of the great opportunity he received to play for Tony Gwynn and the exposure that comes with that. It was a very good move by Justin.
