It doesn't affect the MCC that much since schools from the conference don't typically play Sioux Falls, but they have applied for membership to NCAA DII. www.keloland.com/sports/newsdetail7981.cfm?Id=0,83883 Sioux Falls is an NAIA power in football and that's not good since the NAIA is already thin on football teams.

If attrition continues at this pace will the NAIA be forced to fold in the next 5-10 years?

I don't know if the NAIA will ever be forced to fold. I think there are probably 150 or so NAIA schools that feel very strong about their affiliation with the organization. But just as the NAIA now is really a shell of what it was 15 years ago, it may look a whole lot different in another 5-10 years than it does now. That may be alright for those 150 or so schools that I think feel better about the NAIA than NCAA. The NCCAA is able to survive with something like 50 schools so there's no reason to believe the NAIA couldn't with 100-150 but it would look a lot different.

A few have. But it's very few. Certainly not 1/10th of the number that have left the NAIA for NCAA.

I imagine some NCAA Division III schools have gone to the NAIA... After a presidential change or economic change. Certainly not the norm but it has happened.

Morningside is the most obvious to return to the NAIA. There are a number of NE schools that returned I think from DIII, Clarke College returned from DIII. Thats just off the top of my head.
I think a good many of the DIII's around the MCC would be interested in discussing a return as well as St. Joe's who still talks about winning the first NAIA football championship, which was actually a tie.
