While not knowing the circumstances of Foster's 'apparent' stepping down, it just seems ridiculous to let so much time go by with so many rumors running around-I can imagine around the Penn community there are a bunch of them.
It's not fair to Foster (not allowing him to move on) nor is it fair to the Penn basketball program. They need time to search for a head coach (so it appears). I have an idea the adiministration has their mind made up, why drag this out?

I may have an answer to that. It seems that whenever there is a job opening at any level within the corporation, it must be posted internally for 2 weeks before they announce it publicly. That allows anyone within the system to get a chance to transfer, if they choose. The person that needs to post any openings may have taken an immediate vacation once the school year ended, and had not posted the job to current employees until recently. I have heard that a couple of insiders have applied for the position.

Rumor on Hickory Husker is that Dean Foster is getting forced out/got forced out to make room for Al Rhodes. We'll see if these rumors are substantiated in the next few days.

Rumor on Hickory Husker is that Dean Foster is getting forced out/got forced out to make room for Al Rhodes. We'll see if these rumors are substantiated in the next few days. He isn't being forced out to make room for Coach Rhodes. He is being forced out because he made some bad decisions. At 61 years of age, he should have known better. Those guys at Hickory Husker......

He was asked to stay away from a certain part of the building, until a given time of the day. He chose to ignore that. He will lose his job. I think that was a bad decision on his part.

Was he trying to eat lunch at 10:30 or something? From what I hear, he scheduled some "away" games, but the other team didn't want to play him. ;D

First, I don't know what happened off the court. If Foster made bad mistakes, as with most of us, it comes back to haunt you.
He should be credited for doing an outstanding job at Penn and I hope he'll be remembered for that.
As for Rhodes, if he does come, great!!
He wasn't the most talented guy around when I watched him play many a night at Penn, an undersized 6', 150 lb. forward, but he dove after every loose ball and played his heart out. If his players copy his heart and love for the game, they'll be fine.

Area coaching legend Dean Foster retires
South Bend Tribune Staff Report
MISHAWAKA — One of the area’s coaching legends in boys basketball has called it quits.
Dean Foster announced his retirement Thursday afternoon after spending the last 10 seasons at the helm at Penn High School.
During his run with the Kingsmen, Foster compiled a 169-70 mark, which included five sectional, three regional, and one semistate championship.
Foster’s overall mark was 426-327, which included stops at Taft High School in Cincinnati, Bremen, and Elkhart Central.
Foster guided Elkhart Central to the Final Four in the 1994-95 campaign in the former single class tournament.
His 2000-01 Penn squad finished 23-3 and reached the Class 4-A state championship game, losing to Indianapolis Pike.

Coach Foster is one of the classiest human beings I have ever met, a great guy, and I will sincerely miss seeing him on sidelines. Everyone I've talked to has so much respect for him. God's going to open a sweet door for him to open a new chapter of his life now, and I wouldn't count this retirement as 100% fully retired, because I know that Coach Foster still loves the game and impacting people's lives, and so I wouldn't be totally shocked, until I hear otherwise, if he came back into coaching at some point.
What a neat, neat man who gave his all!
