This is completely wrong. Why do colleges and universities have to raise money? To pay for the difference between its costs and the revenue generated from tuition. Student tuition at HU does not cover all the costs of that student's education. This is true for almost every school except for the Harvards of the world, but they are working with a different endowment than the rest of us. The reason the tuition waiver does not cost the institution that much is that an extra student or two in a bunch of classes does not require the college to hire extra people, etc. But, you can't do too many of those, or it will have significant costs. This is what I meant. Thanks for clearing that up.

I was not saying that diversity is a bad thing. I was not saying that I want HC to stay a primarily white school. So please don't even begin to go down that road, because it’s a load of crap and I care to hear it.
The problem I have is that it is open to ONLY minorities, not just people in general who are in need. I personally think that’s terrible. Why is it that they are saying that only ethnic minorities need this scholarship? I’m not saying it is, but there could be a little racial profiling there. And in all honesty I don’t think that’s really it, I was really just kidding on that last remark. But seriously, if they are going to have this type of scholarship, for a demographic of the population that accounts for only 11% of the overall applicants for enrollment, I think they should have a scholarship for the white kids. Sound ridiculous? Maybe. I personally know AT LEAST 15 people who at one point or another, they left Huntington or took time off DUE TO MONEY. I think it is an absolute travesty! There are plenty of people who regardless of color or ethnic back ground would LOVE to come to Huntington but just cant afford it. Why not just set up the same fund or whatever but just open it up to PEOPLE IN NEED, not just minorities.
Not to mention, I sincerely feel like this is nothing more then a publicity stunt by the school. They want to make it look like it is such an inviting environment for ethnic minorities, and make everyone think they are so diverse, but really they’re not.
And I know because I am speaking out against something that benefits minorities I am going to get pegged as a racist, whatever, I’m not, but again … whatever. Me being racist would be like HURG and his love for the Illini, hating anyone else who is an Illini fan. Just wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.
But think what you want.

So please don't even begin to go down that road, because it’s a load of crap and I care to hear it. Do you mean you don't care to hear it? There are plenty of people who regardless of color or ethnic back ground would LOVE to come to Huntington but just cant afford it. Why not just set up the same fund or whatever but just open it up to PEOPLE IN NEED, not just minorities. You're missing the point. The purpose of this scholarship program is to promote ethnic diversity not economic diversity. The way that Huntington is attempting to promote that is by providing scholarships to a small number of minority students. There are several ways that the school needs to try to make itself more attractive to minority students, but one is financial help. Are they saying that minorities are the only one's with financial trouble? No. I think you are seeing what you want to see if that is the impression that you are getting. Are financial issues a problem for many students? Yes. That is a reality on basically every college campus around the nation. Getting a college degree is not cheap as many of us on this board are well aware of. Could a scholarship program help in that area? Sure, but again that is not what HU is trying to focus on. They are dealing with one issue at a time here. Right now that issue is ethnic diversity. Not to mention, I sincerely feel like this is nothing more then a publicity stunt by the school. They want to make it look like it is such an inviting environment for ethnic minorities, and make everyone think they are so diverse, but really they’re not. No they are trying to create an environment that is conducive to minorities. To promote more ethnic diversity at a campus from scratch you have to provide an incentive for minorities to come to your school. Right now, I can see why a minority wouldn't want to come to HU. There is little diversity in the student population as well as the faculty/staff. Not only that but the surrounding community is 99.5% white. Is throwing money at the problem going to solve everything? No. I hope that it is only the first step that Huntington takes in this process. Perhaps having cultural days on campus where different ethnic groups are highlighted and students from those groups are able to share some of their culture with the rest of the community could be a great step. And I know because I am speaking out against something that benefits minorities I am going to get pegged as a racist, whatever, I’m not, but again … whatever. I'm not pegging you as a racist. I just think you are being somewhat obtuse to thinking through this issue. That is my opinion. You have yours and I respect that. Me being racist would be like HURG and his love for the Illini, hating anyone else who is an Illini fan. Not sure I understand the analogy.

I just think that more diversity helps make the school more welcoming for more people. Of course the school is doing this to help attract more students, in particular minorities, because simply it does look better and more inviting. I don't think this is to say HU is racist and they are doing this to make themselves look better, but again more diversity means more welcoming to more people.
Ilikebasketball, I understand what you are saying, and don't think you are racist because of your remarks (though you are coming across as very defensive), but there are many scholarships out there for many people, and I for one don't have a problem with HU offering this minority one.
There are also scholarships and programs set up specifically for international students, and I haven't come across anyone who has a problem with that either. Obviously HU is an expensive school, and I'm sure they wish they could make it affordable for everyone, but unfortunately that's reality. I know I'm still paying off my student loans.

I think it takes a special background for a minority to fit in in these situations. I just wonder if it does any good in the long run. It's almost like, "Ooh look, there's the minority on campus, now we're ethnically diverse!" Then the minority feels singled out as if everyone's staring at them.
Ethnic diversity runs much deeper than just having a minority or two on campus.
The best way to increase ethnic diversity on campus -- Start a football program!

I think it takes a special background for a minority to fit in in these situations. Agreed. There has to be students on both sides of the equation that are sensitive to cultural issues and willing to work to accommodate the ethnic differences of the people around them. This is especially true for minorities coming into a majority white setting. I just wonder if it does any good in the long run. It's almost like, "Ooh look, there's the minority on campus, now we're ethnically diverse!" Then the minority feels singled out as if everyone's staring at them. That's dangerous defeatist language. To not pursue diversity means not fully pursuing an understanding of God and who God is. Jesus did not balk at the stigma of differences. A perfect picture of this is the story of the woman at the well in John 4. There were so many cultural implications that Jesus was breaking in interacting with that woman. Jews did not interact with Samaritans, men did not directly address women that were not their wife in a public setting especially a adulterous woman like this one. But Jesus didn't care. It was a difficult situation and Jesus pursued reconciliation instead of yielding to cultural stigmas. God created us in his image meaning each person from each background and each ethnic group possesses something unique in showing God's character. In Revelation 21 John is describing the beauty of the kingdom of God and he is very careful in verse 24 to mention that the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it. The fact that he uses the term "their glory" tells us that God has given different people different parts of HIS Glory to bring into the kingdom. I believe that it is our duty on this earth to passionately pursue a relationship with God that reflects Him and His character. If someone else possesses a different aspect of God that I do not possess I want to get to know that person and celebrate the reflection of God that is shown through that person. That means diversity in our relationships, diversity in our churches, and diversity in our schools. Ethnic diversity runs much deeper than just having a minority or two on campus. Exactly! But you have to start somewhere. The best way to increase ethnic diversity on campus -- Start a football program! That may be a great solution on many mid-sized campuses, but Huntington simply does not possess the student population or the finances to support a football program. Therefore, HU must come up with different creative measures to promote diversity.

HURG -- For once we almost agree on everything!
The comments that you mentioned of mine that sounded defeatist were not meant in that manner. My point was that if a college just struts a couple minorities out to say they have ethnic diversity without actually fostering something deeper within the culture of the college, then it's not really ethnic diversity.
And my football program comment was more tongue-in-cheek. My current school has little ethnic diversity outside of the athletes on campus. But with 25 sports and almost 600 student-athletes (and 85+ football players), it certainly feels diverse when you walk around campus!

Hmmmm what a bunny trail guys! hahaha
Interesting subject and kind of touchy content. I will chime in a little bit and share my two cents (if its even worth THAT much).
I kind of see both sides here. I think for the most part I am forced to the side of "ilikebball". And in that I mean that i am not a huge fan of this scholarship program. Not because I dont want to see Hutington become more diverse, because I do, that was one of my biggest gripes about HU (as well as Chapel ...). But the think I do not like is that everything is racial. I dont like when these type of situations become have so much to do with race. I feel scholarships should be based on need. Thats just my opinon and what I feel. To me, there are some scary similarities between this and Affirmitive Action. To me, these things should have NOTHING to do with race or ethnic background. I understand that people can do what they want with there money and if someone wants to take a large amount of money and set up a scholarship for people they want ... they can do that. And they have that right. Being a member of YFC staff I can tell you there is a very LARGE number of people in the YFC world who are very against the "YFC" name being on this scholarship. That doesnt really mean a whole lot, other then to say its not like everyone is completely on board with this.
Now I would like to back up a little bit and reiterate the fact that I am completely in love with the idea of making HU more diverse. Really I am. And i totally understand that there arent a ton of options as to how to get people of different ethnic backgrounds to HU without setting up special funds that would allow for them to be there. Which oddly sounds like bribery, but either way. But yes, they have to start somewhere, and yes where else would they start.
I dont know. Like I said ... its a tough situation.
Also, HIRG, I think by "Ilikebball"comment of "Me being racist would be like HURG and his love for the Illini, hating anyone else who is an Illini fan. Just wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense" .... I think he is implying he (or she i guess) is infact of some ethnic minority. At least thats the way I read it. Could be wrong.

Now HURG is pulling out the God card .... Watch out The "God card"? I'm sorry that I feel strongly about this and the reason that I feel strongly about it is based from what I have gleaned from Scripture in wrestling with this topic. I hope you are not insinuating that one should not attempt to understand and apply Biblical truths to problems especially problems at a Christian University.

Ok wow … first of all get off your biblical high horse for a second. I know you must be some former bible major and all, and you probably are just looking for some avenue to make yourself sound really righteous and all high mighty, so good. I’m glad you got that all out. We all now know that any biblical discrepancy we have, we can go to you. So thank you. But ya that is EXACTLY what I was insinuating …. “Oh my gosh stop reading your bible everyone, don’t push yourself or learn anymore!!! STOP STOP!!!!” Give me a break. Grow up a little bit. No one is saying the bible is stupid are whatever, so just save it kid. It was a harmless tongue and cheek comment, if you are going to have your feathers ruffled by something like that, go out into the real world and deal with REAL people and grow some tougher skin.
And wow, “WAU” ….. good work on figuring out that analogy! At least I’m alone in thinking this scholarship is just ridiculous.
Enough arguing and bickering like little girls. How about some basketball?

How about some basketball? Give me a frickin' break. You're ridiculous. Just because I bring a Biblical basis into a discussion you jump all over me for being "high and mighty" and "trying to appear righteous." That's crap. I am in no way trying to paint myself as a perfect saint, but rather trying to share my view and what I've been learning. What's wrong with that? Apparently that's not relevant here. Don't lecture me about being in the "real world" and dealing with "real people." You think the people I come in contact with on a daily basis are fake? Am I in some sort of Truman Show here? GMAFB. If anyone needs to "grow up" here my friend, it's you. Come back when you're ready to have an intelligent discussion instead of firing insults or "tongue and cheek" comments anytime anyone disagrees with you.
