Just announced as official from both the LA Galaxy and Everton.
Landon will join the "Toffes" on loan starting January 2nd to assure himself of being in shape for the World Cup and for a chance to show England fans just exactly what they are up against in South Africa. He will join US National Teammate Tim Howard (GK).
From SoccerbyIves.net:
Landon Donovan's loan move to Everton has been completed, sources confirmed to SBI on Thursday.
The U.S. national team star and Los Angeles Galaxy captain will join the Liverpool-based club when the transfer window opens on Jan. 1.
Donovan is being brought in to provide cover for an injury-depleted Everton offense that has struggled to produce goals this year. He will join U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard on an Everton side that will be competing in the Europa League and FA Cup during Donovan's loan spell.
No details on the deal were available, but Donovan is expected to join Everton on a short-term loan deal that would see him return to the Los Angeles Galaxy in time for the start of the 2010 MLS season.

Donovan just bagged another assist for Everton from a corner kick.
He's now got 2 assists and 1 goal in his short time at Everton.

I watched this game and he was very dangerous for Everton. He also drew a penalty kick. Saha took it and missed it, but Donovan was very active. He played very well against Ashley Cole...a defender for Chelsea and England. I think the English are realizing just how good Donovan actually is! I can't wait until June 12th.

As Gabe knows, I still can't stand Landycakes.
However, I have to admit he had a great game against Chelsea. Plus he managed to break Cashley Cole's ankle (someone I like even less than LD!)

Landycakes died over a year ago........it's now "Mandon Donovan".
People like you must really be angry that an MLS player can go to England and play so well. Landon has been Evertons best player in their past two games. He's doing a great job.

I have nothing against someone just because they are an MLS player, I just am not a Donovan fan. In this case I was actually begrudgingly complimenting him. That has always been the the frustration and the Landycakes argument. Others such as McBride, Friedel, Spector, Lewis, Convey, and then Dempsey went over and gutted it out to see success in the Premiership while he got soft in the MLS (outside of an occasional purple patch against Mexico). I'll say it again, I don't like him and don't think I ever will, but he has played very well at Everton.

I think Landon is proof that you don't have to play in Europe to play at a high level.
He's been doing it for years.

But think how much better he could be if he played there all the time!

Isn't it sad that the MLS League isn't very good or compared to the Premiere League? I wonder how many years it will take, or if it ever will, to be TRULY competitive with the Premier League. Not just one team from the MLS, but the whole league to be competitive.....

I don't think it will ever be on the same level, but I wouldn't say that because it won't that it's sad, as you mentioned.

It won't ever be on the same level and I think it's outrageous to even try to compare the two.
1) There is far to much money in the EPL for MLS to ever catch up with it. One positive for MLS on that note though is that there are several EPL/Coke League Championship teams going bankrupt because they are trying to keep up with the jones. Within the next decade you will see a major restructuring of the financial model not just in the EPL, but throughout Europe.
2) No competition - There is no other competition for TV Ratings or Contracts in England for their soccer leagues. MLS has to fight to keep themselves visible on ESPN because there are 1,000 things that people in America could watch on any given night.
3) MLS is better than most leagues in Europe, just not the big boys (Serie A, La Liga, EPL). Not only is the talent deeper than in most European Leagues but attendance numbers are better also.
4) The League is 15 years old, what do you expect when you compare that with established soccer countries that have been doing this for over 100 years? Relax............
