In addition, there’s more of a demand for Division II membership, he said, now that the division has successfully branded itself as an attractive membership destination. The Membership Committee, in fact, recently approved a policy stipulating that no more than 30 institutions can be in the membership process in a given year.

more info on membership process to join D2, they are tightening the screws, I'm sure it will cut down on who decides to make the move...also the process will be made easier for a D1 to move down...one D1 - New Orleans - is looking at D3, looks like there will be some more D1's moving down...interesting changes

I have a hard time believing there will be any more than a handful of schools over the next five years make a move down from Division I. I know full-well the mindset of those in Division I athletics and very few want to take a step backwards. It is a nightmare to make a move like that. Most athletic administrators and Division I presidents would rather bleed money from their athletic departments than make a move to a different division. New Orleans is an a VERY unique situation in that they had announced that they were cutting athletics altogether less than a year ago until a student referendum changed that course of events. Unless other schools go down a similar route, very few are going to decide to move down. As bad off as BGSU is financially, our administration and school president would rather have a Division I program that was unable to be competitive at that level than have a Division II program that could compete for national championships year in and year out.

I had heard as many as 50, heard from an NAIA Commissioner who had a meeting with both an NAIA and NCAA rep telling him this...my good contact at the NCAA, more likely said around25 or 30 over the next couple of years...this is why they have changed the D2 membership waiting period for those wanting to move down, and making it harder for an NAIA school to go to D2...
the big D1's want to weed some folks out, they hate to share that football money with you MAC schools...
U of New Orleans gave there students a say and they voted it down, made it easy for them to say see you...2 schools this year have already announced..
more to come...

Football is a different beast from going from Div. I to Div. II. I could see football splitting up into two divisions, with the FCS conferences having their own division and the non-AQ conferences having their own division. But as far as going from DI to DII across the board in all sports, the MAC is far from at the bottom of the food chain. There are 150 DI schools well spending well below what the MAC spends on athletics and would be dropping before the MAC.

The average MAC budget is $19.1 million, which is higher than 22 Division I athletic conferences. The big boys may be trying to get the MAC out of FBS football but not out of Div. I.

The probem which is happening during all of this, "monkey see, monkey do", makes it a lot easier to make those major changes in athletics. Raise our school bill, "no way" so go ahead and cut athletics. Schools on the edge will be looking at these issues.
By the way, Northeastern "got rid" of football, they aren't dropping to D2, in the article above they said to expensive to run
